November 05, 2014
8:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Sari Pan Pacific Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia.
The JustJobs Network and its Indonesian partners, Perkumpulan Prakarsa and Akatiga Center for Social Analysis, will jointly host a roundtable discussion entitled, “Creating Quality Job Opportunities in the Context of ASEAN Free Trade: A Regional Strategy for Expanding Employment in the Jokowi Government.”
While Indonesia’s rate of economic growth fared better than other emerging economies’ in the years following the 2008 financial crisis, job-creating parts of its economy are in decline. With young people frustrated and inequality on the rise, Indonesia must urgently confront the challenge of creating high-quality employment for its aspirant, growing workforce.
Meanwhile, regional integration and the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 pose both a challenge and opportunity for the country. If Indonesia skills its workforce and strengthens job-creating export industries, it can leverage integration to solve employment woes and realize its demographic dividend. With the election of Joko Widodo, now is the time for the country to develop a policy roadmap that prepares Indonesia’s workers and businesses to reap the benefits of ASEAN integration through creation of high-quality jobs.
Our dialogue will seek to prepare that roadmap, convening government, civil society, the private sector, and academic researchers for a rich discussion on the policies necessary to create “just jobs” for Indonesian people in the ASEAN era. The program will be held in Bahasa Indonesia, but accommodations will be made for English speakers.
