April 20, 2015
12:00 to 14:00 hrs
Tabard Inn, 1739 N Street, NW. Washington, DC.
The JustJobs Network (JJN), the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) and the AFL-CIO will organize a roundtable discussion on “The Future of Work in the Digital Economy.” Our guest of honor will be Reiner Hoffmann, President of Germany’s Trade Union Confederation (DGB).
While labor markets in Germany and the US differ in many aspects, both face a common challenge – the disruptive nature of structural changes that are driven mainly by technological progress and automation. This is true for traditional industries such as manufacturing but also increasingly for the service sector. The question is, what will this new “on-demand” or “digital” economy mean for workers and jobs? How can we make sure that the future jobs are “just” jobs? And what constructive role can unions, businesses and government play in navigating this uncharted territory?
The discussion will be followed by lunch. Please write to GregRandolph@justjobsnetwork.org to participate.
The JustJobs Network (JJN) is a private, nonpartisan organization finding evidence-based solutions to one of the most pressing challenges of our time: How to create more and better jobs worldwide. The organization produces high-quality empirical research on good job creation, focusing its work on the critical knowledge gaps in the global employment landscape. JJN convenes a diverse global network of policy shapers, academics, and grassroots leaders to help forge a dynamic, alternative channel for dialogue on employment.
The Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) is a non-profit German political foundation committed to the advancement of public policy issues in the spirit of the basic values of social democracy through education, research, and international cooperation.
The AFL-CIO is the umbrella federation for US unions, with 56 unions representing 12.5 million working men and women. The federation works to ensure that all people who work receive the rewards of their work—decent paychecks and benefits, safe jobs, respect and fair treatment. The AFL-CIO provides an independent voice for working families and ways for working people to be actively engaged in politics and legislation. The federation holds corporations accountable for their treatment of employees and ensures the voice of working people is heard in the financial system. The AFL-CIO also works with federations of unions in other countries toward global social and economic fairness.
