    Bihar—India’s latest urban frontier

    Bihar’s unconventional urbanisation is not characterised by the development of industrial hubs that generally characterise the process of urbanisation. Despite being famous for its out-migration, Bihar is experiencing something that the author describes as “urbanisation from within” i.e. the natural growth and densification of small towns and villages, increased population density and a shift from agriculture to non-farm activities. This article points out challenges in this form of urbanisation and suggests changes that will transform these urbanising villages into centers of job-rich economic development.

    Water and Livelihoods in Meghalaya

    This report, part of Jal Kaushal, a research project undertaken in partnership with Arghyam, explores the jobs-tasks-skills nexus of water management in rural Meghalaya. Building on the understanding that community involvement is critical for water management, this report seeks to illuminate the nature of this involvement and the barriers that need to be overcome to ensure sustained water management and achieve water security.

    Mobility and Women’s Employment Outcomes

    Karnataka’s Shakti scheme, which provides free bus rides to women, aims to improve women's access to better jobs, education, and public spaces by easing mobility restrictions. JJN, in partnership with the Fiscal Policy Institute, Government of Karnataka, is conducting a baseline study to understand the initial impact of the scheme on women’s mobility and their access to employment opportunities and public spaces. This brief presents the methodology and initial findings of the baseline study conducted in September and October 2023.
