Towards an Inclusive Digital Economy for Girls and Women in the MENA Region: A Case Study of Egypt

This report examines the extent to which strategies for building and supporting a digital economy facilitate the empowerment of women and girls within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with a case-based focus on Egypt.

Key Highlights

This case study, authored by Rasha Hassan, presents results of a qualitative analyses (through semi-structured interviews) of two specific government initiatives aimed at fostering participation of women in Egypt’s digital economy. These programs are a) “Qodwa Tech” – which is overseen by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) since 2019 and aims to bolster the economic and social empowerment of Egyptian women through the strategic utilisation of ICT, and b) “She Leads” – which was initiated by the National Council for Women (NCW) with the primary focus on providing support to girls who are enrolled in technical education schools to enhance their digital skills.

The study offers insight into the opportunities and barriers that existing strategies present for involvement of girls and women in the digital workforce in the region.
